Energizer

Activity #1: Arrival exercise as participants enter the workshop

ℹ️ In this activity, you will encourage participants to share initial thoughts and reflections from previous phases of the DSB process while they wait for the workshop to begin.

How to Prepare

If you haven't already, put up the following posters on the main wall:

  • Header posters for Modules A-E from Workshop 1
  • Workshop 1 Strategy Summary Posters 1 and 2
  • Workshop 1 Health System Barriers Poster
  • Four blank flip charts. Write the following prompts on the flip charts:
    • What did you learn in the field?
    • What surprised you in the field?
    • What confirmed your assumptions?
    • What made you sad? What gave you hope?

Facilitation Steps:

  • Set the tone and welcome participants: consider playing local music as participants walk in the room to create a relaxed environment.
  • Participants to reflect on the process and learnings so far: as participants sign in to the workshop, encourage them to read the main wall posters and key decisions made during Workshop 1.

Facilitation Steps:

Only for Workshop 1 Participants: On the flip chart paper on the wall, ask participants to add thoughts and reflections from the fieldwork in response to the following prompts:

  • What did you learn in the field?
  • What surprised you in the field?
  • What confirmed your assumptions?
  • What made you sad? What gave you hope?

Start the Workshop

Time to officially start the workshop!

First, are there any opening remarks? Once the opening remarks are done, officially start the workshop with Activity 1.

ℹ️ Be flexible how you open the session, and be sure to follow the norms in your community (starting with prayers or official remarks, for example).

Activity #2: Introductions and recap of the DSB process

Create a collaborative environment by inviting participants to share insights from their fieldwork and reintroduce themselves.

How to Prepare

  • Set up a computer to show the Recap to DSB Presentation to explain the DSB to participants.
    • Read the presentation in advance and ensure you remove the instruction boxes.
    • Add in the key decisions made in Workshop 1.
  • If you don’t have access to a projector or electricity in the workshop:
    • Place the Workshop 2 Header Posters next to each other on the wall—you will use this to explain the workshop flow.
    • Read the Recap to DSB presentation and make notes on flip chart paper to share with participants.
    • Use the Strategy Summary Posters 1 and 2 to recap the decisions made in Workshop 1.

Facilitation Steps

  • Welcome participants back and introduce the workshop. You can say: “Welcome back to Workshop 2! This is the second workshop in the Demand Strategy Builder Process, where we’re working together to build a strategy to increase demand for immunization in the prioritised zero-dose or underimmunized communities. I’m excited to continue building on the important work we’ve started together. For those who travelled to the field, the data and insights you collected will be critical to make our strategy relevant and impactful.”
  • Invite participants to introduce themselves and share an experience from the field: ask participants to share their name, role, and their most memorable moment from the field.
  • Give a brief overview of the DSB process so far. Explain: “Let's review the DSB process so far. In Workshop 1, we identified priority communities with low immunization rates, and discussed their main immunization barriers. We then went to the field to speak to communities and healthcare workers to understand more about their needs and barriers.”
  • Use the Recap to DSB Presentation to review the DSB process:
    • Slide 2: Briefly explain what the outcome of the Demand Strategy Builder is: a strategy to increase demand for immunization in a few priority underimmunized communities.
    • Slide 4: Provide participants with an overview of the DSB process.
    • Slide 5-8: Give participants a recap of the key decision points from Workshop 1. Ensure you fill them in in advance.
    • If you are unable to present, share the key points from the presentation via flip chart and using the Header Posters.
  • Lead an icebreaker activity to engage participants and make them feel comfortable. Refer to the Icebreaker Suggestions in the Facilitation Tips guide if needed.
  • Set ground rules with participants to create a respectful and open atmosphere. You can do this by asking participants to make their own rules. Examples include:
    • Respectful listening and giving everyone a chance to speak
    • Constructive and collaborative feedback
    • Staying on time for each session
    • Encourage participation from everyone, especially quieter voices

Write the ground rules on your flip chart so they can be referenced throughout the workshop.

Activity #3: Overview of Workshop #2 objectives and flow

ℹ️ In this activity, you will explain the purpose of Workshop 1, its goals, and provide an overview of the agenda.

  • How to prepare: print and distribute daily agendas to participants.
  • Introduce the goals of the workshop: outline the main goals of Workshop 2. You can say: “In Workshop 2, we’re moving from insights to action. Our objectives are to: — Analyse the field data and refine our focus areas for the strategy. — Develop targeted solutions for the prioritised barriers. — Create an actionable plan, defining roles, timelines, and budgets to implement the strategy.”
  • Provide an overview of the workshop flow. Explain the structure of the workshop across three days, outlining the focus of each day’s activities.
    • Day 1: Analyse field insights and refine focus areas.
    • Day 2: Develop solutions for the prioritised barriers.
    • Day 3: Create an actionable plan with roles, timelines, and budgets.

Use the Workshop 2 Header Posters to help you explain the modules.

Remind the participants that Workshop 2 is a critical phase in translating insights into a practical, actionable strategy.

Facilitation Tips:

  • Encourage storytelling: During introductions, encourage participants to share brief field stories. This can help reinforce the real-world impact of their work and create a sense of shared purpose.
  • Visual aids for recap: Use slides or flip chart visuals to illustrate the DSB process so far, making it easy for participants to follow along. Encourage participants to walk around the room.
  • Adapt based on group familiarity: Adjust the pace of the introduction based on how familiar participants are with each other and with the DSB process.
