Welcome to Module B!

Purpose

In this module, you will learn more about the priority communities for your demand strategy.

What You’ll Achieve

By the end of this module, you will:

  1. Understand what participants already know about the priority communities selected during Module A.
  2. Create personas to better understand these communities.

Activity #1: Understand priority communities by developing personas

ℹ️ This activity focuses on understanding children and families who are most vulnerable to under or zero-dose immunization. Participants will create personas to better understand the lives of the priority communities identified in Module A.

How to Prepare

  1. If you haven’t already, put up the Header Poster for Module B: Who on the main wall.
  2. Assign participants to groups at different tables:
    1. List the priority communities identified in Module A. Participants will be split into groups, with each group focused on one community. If you have four prioritised communities, you need at least four groups. Most groups will likely have four to six people.
    2. Assign everyone to one priority community identified in Module A. They will work together on activities at different tables.
      1. Ensure participants who work and live in the relevant community are assigned to that group, e.g. a community elder or healthcare worker of X community should be in the group for that community.
      2. Each group should only focus on one priority community.
      3. Let each group know they’ll work together throughout the rest of the DSB process.
  3. On each table, give every group one copy of Table Worksheet: Persona and one set of Prompt Cards: Who.

Facilitation Steps

  • Move to the group tables: move everyone into their priority community groups on different tables.
  • Explain what a persona is: make sure you feel comfortable to explain this. If you would like support in understanding the purpose of the personas, see the link above. You can use this script, if helpful:
    • “A persona represents key traits and behaviours of a specific community or group of people. For example, if we focus on low-income mothers in rural areas, a persona can show their challenges, skills, and goals. After we create these personas, they will be a visual aid and reference for us throughout the whole process, helping us design strategies tailored to their needs.”
    • You can show participants the (EXAMPLE) Table Worksheet: Persona for inspiration, and to explain how they can go about filling out the template.
  • Introduce the persona worksheet and its four sections:
    • Demographics: What is the typical family size in this community? How old are the children? Parents? What is the typical family socio-economic status like?
    • Living Conditions: Where do they live? E.g. Urban slums, hard-to-reach areas, areas affected by conflict, mobile and migrant communities.
    • Healthcare Coverage and Access: What is the immunization coverage rate for this community? What healthcare services are available in this community? How far is the closest health facility?
    • Healthcare Behaviours: What does their daily routine look like? What healthcare services do they use? Who is the primary caregiver?
  • Guide participants to create personas
    • Groups will use the Table Worksheet: Persona to document what they know about their priority community group, by discussing and filling in the persona worksheet. They should create one persona per community group. If they want, they can create more than one.
    • Encourage them to note any assumptions (things they think they know, but aren’t sure about) they make, and mark them on the worksheet.
    • Encourage groups to use the prompt cards on their table to help them think about the characteristics of their priority community. Each group should have one set of Prompt Cards: Who.
  • Document and share
    • Explain to participants that the personas will be used as a reference throughout the whole DSB process, including Workshop 2. So it’s important they’re kept safe and they refer back to them.
    • Assign one person per group to look after the Table Worksheet: Persona.
    • Take a photo of the personas in case they are lost, and need to be rebuilt for Workshop 2.
    • If time allows, they can present them to the larger group for feedback.

Facilitation Tip

📝 Ask groups to nominate a note-taker for the day to make sure all group activity inputs are captured throughout the workshop.

Congratulations on completing Module B! 🎉 You’re doing great.

Next, move to Module C: Why.
