Tourism MSMEs in the Hindu Kush Himalayas (continued)
“Furthermore, an increase in energy access from renewable sources (solar or micro-hydropower) enabled new businesses to emerge, such as mechanical workshops, poultry farms, fruit processing units, metal works, and communication services. Similarly, existing enterprises expanded to meet diverse consumer needs through the purchase of new equipment such as oilseed pressing machines, fruit-juice makers, sewing machines, and egg incubators. MSMEs in tourism in India operationalized new accommodation options such as rural homestays and farm retreats in previously zero-electricity areas with the help of solar lighting and solar thermal facilities. A homestay expanded its business to large-scale production of Himalayan produce and is now considering a further expansion into wool products, rustic utensils, and Bhimal handloom products such as yoga mats, foot mats, and bags.
With renewable energy solutions that provided access to electricity, businesses in the region acquired new information about markets and customer needs leading to more investment in entrepreneurship. Access to electricity also allowed businesses to collaborate with digital networks such as Airbnb, Google My Business, and other bed-and-breakfasts resulting in a wider customer base.
All these expansive business opportunities enabled by renewable energy solutions will lead to more income. In Bhutan, entrepreneurs reported a growth in profits by adopting distributed renewable energy solutions, causing a positive ripple effect throughout the local economy. In Afghanistan also, entrepreneurs reported greater profits by being able to cut down on energy costs after switching to solar energy.
Social benefits are also seen in the form of increased participation of local women in MSMEs leading to the enhancement of their skills and knowledge.”
