What are Coronaviruses, SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19?

  • Coronaviruses (CoV) are a large family of viruses which cause a wide range of disease such as the common cold, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
  • SARS-CoV-2 is a new strain of coronavirus.
  • The disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 infection is called Coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
  • The symptoms of COVID-19 may vary. Common symptoms include: mild fever, cough, fatigue, shortness of breath, and myalgias (muscle aches).
  • Anyone can become sick with COVID-19, regardless of age and health status. People above the age of 60 and those with underlying medical conditions are more at risk.
  • Complications of COVID-19 include severe disease and may lead to death.
  • The COVID-19 vaccine will be important for protection from COVID-19.

COVID-19 Vaccination

Please refer to your national/sub-national guidance and target group recommendations.

  • These recommendations are developed by the National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG) from global guidance developed by the WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE).

Initial supply of COVID-19 vaccine will be limited.

  • In the context of limited supply of COVID-19 vaccine, vaccination alone will not be sufficient to prevent community level transmission.
  • Public health and social measures (i.e. masks and social distancing) should continue to be used.

Before, during, and after vaccination, it is important to continue following standard precautions for infection prevention and control.
