What is 'Kudhinnaa Gaathun:Aharumen Beynunvaa Rah'?

The Kudhinnaa Gaathun: Aharumen Beynunvaa Rah (KG:ABR) initiative aims to closely collaborate with local authorities to improve the coordination and convergence of UNICEF programmes at the island level for synergies in delivering social services for children. This allows UNICEF Maldives to work closely with the communities and children, and to model innovations that could be scaled up nationwide to:

KG:ABR incorporates five zones with 10 islands (North, North Central, Central, South Central and South):

Zone 1:  Kulhudhuffushi City (HDh.), Sh. Funadhoo

Zone 2:  R. Meedhoo, B. Eydhafushi

Zone 3:  AA. Ukulhas, V. Felidhoo

Zone 4:  Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, L. Gan

Zone 5:  Fuvahmulah City (Gn.), S. Hithadhoo

In-line with UNICEF’s core principle of For Every Child, Every Right, the KG:ABR initiative will accelerate:

  • Coordination and convergence of UNICEF's support at island level
  • Rollout of UNICEF’s 8 flagships at island level
  • Planning & implementation of key interventions to address children’s issues at island and city level
  • Monitoring of the situation of children including the mapping of vulnerabilities in the respective islands and atoll
  • Advocacy for UNICEF's commitment for children’s rights at island, city and atoll level
  • Championing all children’s rights at island, city and atoll level

As part of the initiative, UNICEF and the island/citycouncils hold key activities in the islands. The activities include:

  • Planning meetings with island/city council
  • Community walk
  • Capacity building activities with members of the island/city council, parents, young people, social services providers, WDC etc
  • Environmental/climate action activities such as beach/island clean up and tree planting.
  • Children’s evening with games

To accelerate children’s rights and human development, UNICEF has identified 8 game-changing flagship initiatives that are transformative, offer opportunities for addressing key systematic bottlenecks, contribute to achieving universality and leaves no child behind. The flagships are:

  • Beleniveriya: Positive Parenting
  • Mental Health and Substance Abuse
  • IBAMA: Supportive and Caring Communities
  • Climate Smart and Resilient Actions
  • UPSHIFT and imaGen: Skills for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Engagement and Employability
  • Developing and Engaging Young People
  • Kaigen Hin’gama: Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyle
  • Prevention and Responding to Violence against Children

The flagships together constitute UNICEF’s agenda to 'Responding Today for Tomorrow'.
