What is menstruation?

Menstruation or "period," is a natural process in a woman's body where it releases tissue that it no longer needs. This tissue comes from the uterus, which is the organ where a baby can develop in a woman's body. Every month, the lining of the uterus thickens in preparation for a fertilized egg in case the woman becomes pregnant. If fertilization doesn't occur or the woman is not pregnant, this lining is released from the body as blood through the vagina. This monthly process is called menstruation or having a period. When a girl has her period, her body is simply shedding a small amount of blood and some unnecessary tissue. It is a normal and natural process that happens as females grow into women and mature physically.
